RE: Workamping at the beach

hey firedude....I've seen other products that hype they convert rust to a paintable surface......mush the same as your tried and true jasco....do those other items use the same process or have you tested them and found jasco (a great name and line of products) to work best or better? thanks Don

RE: Workamping at the beach

Dry beach and wet beach are the main differences. We are at the oregon beach.......so a wet beach.....when we pull in we wash/clean everything and treat steps, hitch, bumper and any other exposed metal that will rust with CorrosionX. When it storms we know there is salt in the rain so we rinse off the truck especially in the wheel wells. My dodge isn't showing any effect of the coast and this is our second winter here. If you notice rust coming off a screw replace it, the stain will spread. I guess just be observant if rust starts stop it. A couple was in here a couple years ago, who had water leaks on their rig in places that they didn't notice......it messed up their rig pretty bad......so look at your roof often and also look at your marker lights and make sure they aren't allowing water in. The rubber they use as a water seal will age and crack in sunlight and leak. Even fog has water and you may get wet at night and it be gone by the time you get up in the morning. www.CorrosionX.com

RE: Looking for Summer job(s) in Alaska

you might combine that with hosting a state park so your camping doesn't cost anything either.............between the two it could be a good solution.. we are headed that way this summer also......heading north in late may coming back in early sept........no working this trip.....just sightseeing, fishing and maybe even panning a little here and there..oh and we had family just move up to wasilla this fall, so we will say hi too........but not too long.......last time was 1998....looking forward to it..........another item off our when we retire list...... good luck Don

RE: For Employers - Workamper Package

many state parks, out west anyway, use volunteers to maintain their parks....go to state parks web pages and they generally have a volunteer section....and all types of tasks too, corps of engineers use allot of volunteers also, the COE doen't use volunteers so much for hosting, but for projects/PR/assistance kinda things........... wildlife refuges, fish and game, tons of opportunities... http://www.volunteer.gov/Gov/index.cfm, is a good link to the federal stuff.......... then after you find something you like ask more questions here, usually someone on this forum has been there and can fill in your blanks..... happy trails Don

RE: Gate keeping. Where do we apply..

or the other obvious.......they close campgrounds (state and federal) in the winter in various states, but still allow day use access....so you park your rig in a campground that is closed to camping and open the gate at ?AM and insure park is empty and close the gate at ?PM, and keep an eye on things.......sometimes they give a stipend sometimes they pay and sometimes you just get your FHU site for free. Those seem like good gig's......... Happy Trails Don

RE: For Employers - Workamper Package

trying to think about how I do a cold call with a potential employees.... 1. I sell us as managers....I let the potential know about us and our experience and our management style. 2. I sell the company..... 3. I sell the location..... 4. Then I have already learned something about the potential employees during the first three. We have a profile we look for in workampers and one of the items is "successfully retired" Now there is chit chat to fill in blanks that I am still wondering about. 5. Then I fill in specifics about the what, where, when, why's... where the nearest walmart is where the nearest VA hosp is, where the nearest casino is, what the local stores are and stuff like that...even whats the best way to come in.....smoothest route.... 6. If they are first timers at this point I remind them that workampers won't increase their personal wealth, but will be able to hold their own financially. 7. Go over general duties and responsibilities.... 8. Then I go into what opportunities in the area we are managing are...what the host sites have and don't have, what we provide....and what standards we expect/encourage, and specific things they will be expected to do...and what the busy season hours are and what the slack season hours are...and I also tell them that after they are here, there might be additional hours available if I know ahead of time......but they know the minimums.....to help make the go/no-go choice 9. This is usually an appropriate place to stop talking answer their questions and ask them if they want to think about it for a bit..... 10. I have a program called ... "experience workamping" for first timers and I offer a couple days free visit to camp and work or watch hosts work... 11. And then if everyone is happy we arrange an exchange of paperwork. 12. Then I keep in touch with them during the off season, to hear if something has come up or if there is a problem that may prevent their arrival.....and by this point they know they can tell us if they have a better offer or whatever as I know that is part of this business, and then if they have a problem I start all over again. And I expect these things So, I kinda get a potential employee to want to work with us first, then approach the income part.........but this approach has been pretty sucessfull in getting great employees. I learned it from a volunteer recruiter and just adapted it to jobs paying minimum wage........next step up from volunteering....hahahahahaha figured if I bored you with my non reference checking approach to hiring....you might find something in it that you can adapt to your approach.....you just never know what will help you... good luck Don

RE: Past hosting references. How important are they?

OK...........if I ever see applications from you two (Dianne and Kirk), I definetly will check them.........but I doubt I will get that opportunity....and if either of you get a chance to check mine....well, rest assured they will be glowing recommendations too......we only use family members who don't have our same last name......and don't want us in their driveway for the season........hahahahahahaha. Shoot, for all I know corporate probably does background checks on everyone we hire since we are so easy......hahahaha happy trails Don

RE: Past hosting references. How important are they?

For me, experience just allows me to skip certain questions during an interview...after a few questions that let me know they do have experience...just like in the other world we used to work in.....who is gonna put down a bad reference?????????.... Also, I am just about convinced we can train people with a positive attitude to do just about any part of hosting. It really isn't that hard to catch onto as long as you want to do it. Anyone is gonna use a reference who will rave about them, and then let them know that their references were being checked by who..... a reference works with us if it is someone we already know and trust. We have had other managers in our position within the company lie to our face about an employee who they just want to get rid of. then they don't have to step up and help the employee get better....as a matter of fact within the last week.

RE: Have you worked Activities?

geez, rally people are messy:p...........hahahahahahahahaha we have used the same thing in campgrounds if we find a group of kids say 6 to 8 or so........and have them do the same......but since we clean our campgrounds so well.....;)our lists aren't that big..... we have started giving stickers for the best scavengers....we also are now putting stickers on bike helmets when we catch kids obeying the calif law that requires helmets.... our web site has a couple other activities for kids ..... stuff like knowing our critters and plants and giving the kids a sheet with pictures of them and let the kids do a scavenger hunt like that also.... great list, things I haven't thought of either! Thank You Don
